Like lau-fi, I could look at these images for hours. I’m thinking of the Lawrence Langer quote I posted calling Anne’s never-to-be-written sequel to her Diary “one of the much-missed unwritten books of Holocaust literature”; it’s maybe an obvious, even maudlin, idea, but it’s one I find inexpressibly affecting. The absence of her post-attic Diary is the absence theorized in post-Holocaust thinking as the impossibility of the true or complete witness, the one who could bear witness to the fact of not surviving, a structural impossibility. Though Langer imagines a ‘real’ diary, a story of life returned from death, there is a sense in which the imagined diary speaks more meaningfully of the void that was and is the Holocaust than its material counterpart ever could; and yet the philosophical and ethical resonances of this argument somehow falter when confronted by a head tilt, a smile, a slightly off-centre gaze, existing both inside and outside of time.
