Faking it vs. Making it

I want to see those outtakes!

lau-fi:

Mary and Rebecca wore their friendship necklaces for their Webster Hall show April 1 as well! <3

I should release the outtakes. The interview was almost 40 minutes long and we had to cut a lot of adorable moments.

beatonna:

Chris Brown is performing at the Grammy Awards and it’s a big fuss!  I had to remind myself why so I went and looked up this old newspaper from 2009.

Ordinary people. The courage to say no.
The photo was taken in Hamburg in 1936, during the celebrations for the launch of a ship. In the crowd, one person refuses to raise his arm to give the Nazi salute. The man was August Landmesser. He had already been in trouble with the authorities, having been sentenced to two years hard labor for marrying a Jewish woman.
We know little else about August Landmesser, except that he had two children. By pure chance, one of his children recognized her father in this photo when it was published in a German newspaper in 1991. How proud she must have been in that moment.

I enjoy things like this immensely.

Like lau-fi, I could look at these images for hours. I’m thinking of the Lawrence Langer quote I posted calling Anne’s never-to-be-written sequel to her Diary “one of the much-missed unwritten books of Holocaust literature”; it’s maybe an obvious, even maudlin, idea, but it’s one I find inexpressibly affecting. The absence of her post-attic Diary is the absence theorized in post-Holocaust thinking as the impossibility of the true or complete witness, the one who could bear witness to the fact of not surviving, a structural impossibility. Though Langer imagines a ‘real’ diary, a story of life returned from death, there is a sense in which the imagined diary speaks more meaningfully of the void that was and is the Holocaust than its material counterpart ever could; and yet the philosophical and ethical resonances of this argument somehow falter when confronted by a head tilt, a smile, a slightly off-centre gaze, existing both inside and outside of time.

Let me break it down for you: she’s writing herself into existence. She’s giving herself a part to play because, God knows, no one else will and she wants to matter in this life. As far as I can tell, it’s working. I went straight to iTunes and bought her new release “Born To Die” in toto (how…

When my department changed buildings a few years ago, the floor it now occupies consisted of a number of businesses renting space. Most of them gave up their leases; the business above was one of the longest holdouts. I had my most recent committee meeting in that room a few months ago. RIP, Best Sign Ever.

it takes a high badass quotient to rock a shirt with your own name on it. lucy fernandez is my fucking hero, because she also appreciates the value of calling everything fascist.
